On Monday, May 30th the Parish Pastoral Councils of Sacred Heart and Saint Brigid’s parishes met for the first time as the Catholic Community of Lexington. Our team of pastoral planners, two from each parish, included Richard Galehouse, Kathleen Blanchard, Paul Ross and Pat Romeo-Gilbert. What a marvelous presentation of the draft version of the pastoral plan followed by discussion and acceptance. The pastoral plan gives all of us knowledge of the steps we will have to take in order to renew us and transform us. As someone has defined it, “Strategic planning provides a framework for the improvement and restructuring of programs management collaboration and evaluation of the organization’s purpose.”

The Pastoral Plan has the potential to transform and renew the life of both parishes. It will identify new possibilities, pose new questions, possibly upset old views, and may even predicate painful decisions.

The Council members have been given the task of creating a vision of what the Catholic Community might look like. They are to ask as many parishioners as possible what their vision might be. Later we will have a survey of parishioners and open gatherings of parishioners. The Council members have also to contact various ministry committee people to determine the state of each parish and begin to describe who we are.

No fixed future awaits us; there are a myriad of possibilities for the future. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can do much to shape our future. Each parishioner will have to contribute to the process of pastoral planning. This will require active involvement in a broad, consultative process.

Tensions, both healthy and unhealthy, exist regarding the values of the world in which we live and the truths and values that are ours as Catholics. In addition, we often find tensions between what we say we value and what we actually do and in deciding what may have to be added, revised, or eliminated in ministry for our two parishes.

In order to be fruitful in what we are about to undertake we need to be united as the people of God, willing to abide by needed changes even though they may be difficult to accept and willing to work in the mission and ministries that continue the work of Christ in this place and at this time.

Holy Humor

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!” His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means?” The son replied, “I do know!” “Okay,” said his father, “What does the Bible mean?” That’s easy, Daddy.” The young boy replied excitedly, “It stands for ‘Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.’”
