The Eisner/Meade Committee made the following recommendation to the Archbishop regarding Sacred Heart Parish’s closing: “Create one parish in Lexington by appointing the current pastor of Sacred Heart to be pastor of all Lexington. Under his direction, parishioners will prepare a proposal to the Archdiocese within one year regarding which facilities will best serve the needs of Catholics in Lexington.”
“In the fullness of time” as Saint Paul writes in the Epistle to the Galatians (Gal 4:4); the Son of God came to us with a mission and plan. He committed Himself to that mission in a public way at the Jordan. He gathered resources and formed leaders and disciples and stayed with it all the way to Jerusalem. The four Gospels unfold the details of that plan and reveal the Spirit in which it was accomplished.
The planning process unfolded in the Gospels depends on God’s grace and our free human response. From the Annunciation to the Ascension, both were necessary. No amount of human planning alone, nor any amount of prayer or grace alone, will bring about the work we are about to undertake. Both are necessary. So, not to plan is as foolish as not to pray.
Jesus invites us, his disciples, to continue His mission and plan to the transformation of our world and our time. It is my hope that our initiatives will flourish and inspire vision for what is possible when we work together as the Catholic Community of Lexington.
We are called to be open to where the Holy Spirit is leading us. This will require significant ongoing education in faith and goodwill for our tendency is to resist change and to desire to go back to some other time and place that no longer can be.
There will need to be practical and creative thinking to propose options that maintain continuity with the past, true to the particular genius of each parish and our Catholic Christian tradition, and face a future very different from the past or even the present.
This is a significant responsibility for everyone in both Sacred Heart and Saint Brigid parishes.
With the guidance of the Holy Spirit our efforts will continue to be a strong welcoming community, rooted in Jesus Christ to give fitting praise and worship to God and to serve all of our people here and beyond Lexington.
In the months ahead I urge all to pray as if everything depended on God and to work as if everything relied on our efforts and gifts. Let us together create a vision of our future and then work to see it become a reality.
