In her marvelous book Gilead, Marilynne Robinson writes about an aging minister who writes his memoirs to his son. “We were very pious children from pious households in a fairly pious town, and this affected our behavior considerably. Once, we baptized a litter of cats. They were dusty little waifish creatures that live their anonymous lives keeping the mice down and have no interest in humans at all, except to avoid them. But the animals all seem to start out sociable, so we were always pleased to find new kittens prowling out of whatever cranny their mother had tried to hide them in, as ready to play as we were… I myself moistened their brows, repeating the full Trinitarian formula. Their grim old crooked-tailed mother found us baptizing away by the creek and began carrying her babies off by the napes of their necks, one and then another. We lost track of which was which, but we were fairly sure that some of the creatures had been borne away still in the darkness of paganism, and that worried us a good deal…Two or three of that litter were taken home by the girls and made into fairly respectable house cats…whether pagan or Christian no one could ever tell.”
Lent is leading us to the Triduum and Holy Week where we will renew our baptismal vows. Lent is a time to ask the Lord to stir up the graces of our baptism so we will know we belong to God in Jesus and others will know we are Christian. Unlike those cats it is not good for people to say of us: “Whether pagan or Christian no one could ever tell.”
The second reading today (2 Timothy 1:8b-10) speaks of the faith that is expressed in living the Christian life and-at the same time-passed on within the family. “I remember the genuine faith of your mother Eunice. Your grandmother Lois had the same sort of faith and I am sure that you have it as well. So I ask you to make full use of the gift that God gave you when I placed my hands on you. Use it well. God’s Spirit doesn’t make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love and self-control. Don’t be ashamed to speak for our Lord.”
May this Lent give us the full measure of God’s Spirit so we might know how beloved we are to the heavenly Father (c.f. Matthew 17:1-9).
God of mercy, you gave us new life through baptism, make us grow day by day in your likeness.

Wings
Women from St. Brigid and Sacred Heart have come together to form a ministry called WINGS, (Women in God’s Spirit). WINGS is a faith enrichment group for women of all ages who want to grow in their relationship with God and each other. WINGS allow us to enrich our spiritual lives while forming new bonds of friendship through prayer, discussion and learning.
WINGS meets weekly during the school year and has three different seasons and three different areas of growth. The fall season offers guest speakers and small discussion groups. The winter season involves the study and sharing of Scripture. The spring season encourages the women to discover ways of putting their faith to practice in their personal and family lives as well as their community.
WINGS meets Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:15 in St. Brigid’s Parish Hall with childcare provided for a nominal fee. Our first meeting is Thursday, March 31 Look for registration forms in the bulletin in the next few weeks. We hope you will join us!
