We now move quickly from the child Jesus to the adult Jesus who is on the move. He begins his public ministry at the River Jordan with the baptism of John. We now move from the Christmas season to that yearly cycle of 33 or 34 weeks in which do not celebrate a specific mystery of Christ but rather celebrate the mystery of Christ in all its fullness. This period is known as Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time begins on Monday January 10th and continues through Tuesday February 8th, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season.
Here at Sacred Heart we are left in the dark about our being here or not for all of this. In the meantime we have to plan ahead. Congregations, like individuals, often make resolutions for the New Year. Here are some ideas that could spark a resolution or two.
One idea is small-group ministries. We will have Frank Bellini and Maryellen Leelman begin a series of facilitator training followed by recruitment of members of small faith groups or better, small groups of faith which would provide opportunities for prayer, study, fellowship and service. This, of course, would include people from Saint Brigid Parish in order for them to form small groups as well.
Because we do not know how long we will be open we need to do some experimenting. We could sponsor some short-term ministries to experiment with programs in which we would foster spiritual growth in various segments of our parish.
We will need to continue our liturgy planning. New members need to be added to the Worship Commission to study liturgical planning and implement programs for liturgy and prayer.
The Christian Service Commission ought to meet with their counterparts at Saint Brigid Parish to share resources and to expand their social justice programming.
More efforts should be made in evangelization. It is estimated that there are 10,000 Catholics living in Lexington. Both Catholic parishes must do more in a joint effort to invite these people to worship with us once again or for the first time. Imagine, if we mounted a real effort to seek these people out, what we could do for the Catholic Community of Lexington.
Let us get excited about the possibilities.
If we do not remain open we will have to help groups and individuals close in a positive way to use our energies for the good of the Church. We will need to remember what we cherished about Sacred Heart. Then we will need to influence other parishes as we take what we have received here to other parts of the diocese.

Q: What do you call the people who regularly evacuate the rear pew at the sound of the first note of the recessional hymn and well before the priest exits?
A: The faithful departed!
