In A. J. Cronin’s book entitled “Keys of the Kingdom,” there is a priest serving in a remote village in China. In one scene, he is leading the villagers to safety when a Chinese army officer blocks their path. The priest steps forward and the officer hits him in the face. He slowly wipes the blood from his mouth then turns the other cheek and is struck again. The priest does not retreat and the officer hits him again and again. Finally the nun and the villagers with him scream out their anguish. Then the long-suffering priest proceeds to beat the living daylights out of the army officer.
Today’s gospel (Luke 6:27-38) calls us to turn the other cheek and to learn to love our enemies. Even as Jesus was dying on the cross, he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” We are presented with a hard question: How are we to understand and live like this?
In the book Zorba the Greek, Zorba offers this advice: One day when I was a child, an old man took me on his knee and placed his hand on my head as though he were giving me a blessing. “Alexis,” he said, “I’m going to tell you a secret. You’re too small to understand now, but you’ll understand when you are bigger. Listen, little one, neither the seven stories of heaven nor the seven stories of earth are enough to contain God, but a person’s heart can contain God. So be very careful, Alexis, and my blessing be with you, never to wound another person’s heart.”
How can we hurt another if God dwells in the other? When will we treat each other as sacred?

Mesi Anpil! (Thank You Very Much)
The parishioners of St. Brigid and Sacred Heart donated over $11,00 in our recent drive to educate the children in Fonde des Blancs. Thanks to your generosity we will be sending $14,000 for the 2004/2005 school year to pay teacher’s salaries and this amount will give them a well-l deserved raise. We pray God will bless your generosity and ask your prayers to settle the unrest in the country and bring peace to its people.
